The 24-Hour Bucket Test
Is your pool losing water due to normal Florida evaporation or an active leak? Follow our easy step-by-step DIY bucket test guide.
Evaporation vs. Pool Leak
Average pool evaporation in Florida is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch per day depending on temperature, humidity, and wind. If your water level drops more than 1/4 inch in 24 hours, you may have a leak!
Step-by-Step Bucket Test Instructions
Fill Bucket with Pool Water
Bring pool water to normal operating level. Fill a 5-gallon plastic bucket with pool water to within 3–4 inches from the top.
Set Bucket on First Step
Place the bucket on the first or second step of your pool, so it is partially submerged in the pool water (this keeps the bucket water temperature equal to pool water).
Mark Water Levels with Tape
Mark the water level INSIDE the bucket with electrical tape or a waterproof marker. Next, mark the pool water level on the OUTSIDE of the bucket.
Wait 24 Hours
Operate your pool pump normally. Return after 24 hours to compare the inside tape mark vs. outside tape mark.
Evaluate Results
If the pool water level (outside mark) dropped significantly more than the bucket water level (inside mark), your pool is losing water through a leak!
